An outdoor kitchen is a harsher environment than anything indoors: direct UV, temperature swings, rain, salt air on the coast, and a BBQ throwing heat a few centimetres from the surface. Material choice matters far more out here than it does inside.

What to avoid
Engineered stone is not recommended in direct sunlight — UV exposure can affect the resin binder over time. If your alfresco area is fully shaded and enclosed the conversation changes, but for an exposed Auckland deck we specify porcelain.
Some natural stones perform well outside, particularly denser granites, provided they are sealed and maintained. Talk to us about the specific stone and the specific location before you commit.
Detailing an outdoor bench
Plan cut-outs for the BBQ, sink and any power early — retro-fitting into installed stone is not an option. Consider a drainage fall away from the house, a splashback to protect the wall behind the burners, and an overhang deep enough to sit at if the bench doubles as a bar.
Take particular care with porcelain edges during and after installation: strong impacts on an edge can chip porcelain, and those chips are not always repairable.
Common questions
What is the best surface for an Auckland outdoor kitchen?
Porcelain, in most cases. It is the most UV and heat stable surface we supply, non-porous, and it holds its colour in direct sun.
Can I use engineered stone outdoors?
We do not recommend engineered stone in direct sunlight. Use porcelain, or discuss a suitable natural stone with us for the specific location.
Do outdoor benchtops need special support?
Outdoor cabinetry needs to be built for the load and the weather. We work with your builder or joiner on substrate and fixing before templating.
Will an outdoor stone benchtop stain from BBQ use?
Porcelain is non-porous and shrugs off most of it. Natural stone outdoors should be sealed and maintained. Wipe up oil and marinade promptly either way.
