A splashback in the same stone as the benchtop is the single most effective upgrade in a modern Auckland kitchen. It removes grout lines, makes cleaning trivial, and lets a beautiful slab carry from the bench up the wall as one continuous surface.

Splashback options
- Full height — floor of bench to underside of the overhead cabinetry, in one continuous run
- Window splashback — stone returning around a window for a seamless frame
- Upstand — a modest 100mm to 150mm return, economical and clean
- Feature wall — stone taken beyond the kitchen for a dramatic focal surface
- Book-matched — veining mirrored across the join on suitable slabs
Plan it at selection, not after
Splashbacks consume slab area, and matching veining requires slabs from the same block. If you decide on a splashback after your benchtop is already cut, the match is a matter of luck. Decide at selection and we will reserve the material.
This is also where budget conversations happen naturally: a full height splashback in a premium natural stone can cost as much as the bench itself, while an upstand in the same stone gives you continuity at a fraction of the slab area.
Behind the hob
Heat clearances are appliance-specific. Porcelain is the most heat tolerant surface we supply. Engineered stone must not take direct high heat. We will work to your appliance manufacturer's requirements and tell you clearly if the stone you have chosen is unsuitable for that position.
Common questions
Can my splashback match my benchtop exactly?
Yes — cutting the splashback from the same slab or the consecutive slab in the block is the most seamless result, and it is why we ask about splashbacks at selection rather than after install.
Can stone go behind a gas hob?
Material and clearances matter. Porcelain handles heat best; engineered stone should never take direct high heat. We will advise based on your appliance and the manufacturer's clearance requirements.
Full height or just a small upstand?
Both work. A full height splashback removes the grout lines and creates a single continuous surface. An upstand is more economical and pairs well with tile or paint above.
Can you book-match a splashback?
On suitable slabs, yes — mirroring the veining across the join is one of the most striking things you can do in a kitchen. It is a premium operation and needs the right block.
