Quartzite is what people usually mean when they say they want the look of marble without the anxiety. It is a natural metamorphic stone — sandstone recrystallised under heat and pressure — and the result is dense, hard and considerably more forgiving than marble in a working kitchen.

Why quartzite for a kitchen island

Care and sealing
Quartzite is natural stone, so seal it and keep it sealed — most professionals recommend at least annually depending on use and cleaning frequency. Never place hot pots directly on any stone benchtop; thermal shock can crack it. Use a cutting board rather than cutting on the surface.

Common questions
Is quartzite the same as quartz or engineered stone?
No. Quartzite is a natural stone quarried from the earth. Engineered stone (often called quartz) is a manufactured product. The names are similar; the materials are not.
Is quartzite harder than granite?
Many quartzites are extremely hard and scratch resistant, which is why they are popular for busy kitchens. Hardness varies by stone — see the Mohs hardness information in our technical resources.
Does quartzite stain?
It is less porous than marble but still natural stone, so sealing matters. Most professionals recommend resealing at least once a year depending on use.
Which quartzite is best for a family kitchen?
