Choosing a finish
- Polished — deepest colour, highest sheen, easiest to wipe clean.
- Honed — matte and contemporary; softens strong colours.
- Leathered — a lightly textured surface with real tactility. Outstanding on dark granites where fingerprints show on polished finishes.
Where granite works hardest
Dark leathered granites are a favourite for island benches and butler's pantries in Auckland homes: they hide daily marks, feel superb underhand and pair well with both timber and painted cabinetry.
Lighter and more patterned granites suit perimeter runs, laundries and hearths where you want durability without dominating the room.
Granite vs the alternatives
Against engineered stone, granite gives you a genuinely one-off surface and higher heat tolerance, in exchange for slab-to-slab variation and annual sealing. Against quartzite, granite generally offers a wider entry-level price band. Against porcelain, granite gives you depth and body that thin surfaces cannot match, though porcelain still wins outdoors under direct sun.

Is granite still a good choice?
Yes. Granite is hard, heat tolerant and available across a very wide range of colours and price levels, from entry level through to rare premium blocks.
Polished, honed or leathered?
Polished maximises colour depth and reflectivity. Honed gives a soft matte surface. Leathered adds subtle texture and is excellent at disguising fingerprints and water marks on dark granites.
Does granite need sealing?
Yes, like all natural stone. Most professionals recommend resealing at least once a year depending on use.
Can granite go outside?
Granite handles outdoor conditions better than engineered stone, though for Auckland outdoor kitchens we most often specify porcelain for maximum UV stability. Talk to us about the specific stone and location.
